The International Teaching Fellowship (ITF) program began in Victoria in 1971 with incoming Fellows only. Since 1975 it has been a two-way program in which Fellows exchange teaching positions and housing for the period of a school year.

Victorian participants develop their professional and personal knowledge and skills through experiencing and studying an overseas education system and culture. School communities benefit when overseas teachers with different perspectives on education and culture and returning ITFs are able to bring new ideas into the system to improve the learning of students in Victorian schools.

The International Teachers Association is administered by a committee of teachers who have been International Teaching Fellows in the past. The ITA works closely with the International Agreements Unit, Department of Education and Childhood Development, and is committed to providing pastoral care, advice and services to Victorian and overseas International Teaching Fellows.

The Association runs a number of social activities across Victoria. Chapter groups operate in Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland, Yarra Valley, Horsham and Wodonga. In 2016 an event has been added for Sunraysia. They run weekends which promote the history and life of Victoria, with highlights of the regional areas. Through its members the association has also run a number of outdoor adventure pursuits which provides another glimpse of the State.
Focus
The International Teaching Fellowship is a program which allows for teachers to exchange teaching positions and homes with a suitably qualified teacher from overseas. Partnerships have previously existed with education organisations in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, The United Kingdom, United States of America and some Asian countries as well as the International School system. Currently partnerships exist with education organisations in Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, and United States of America, as well as the International School system.
A Fellowship can be awarded to teachers who wish to undertake an investigative project overseas while giving them experience in an alternative educational setting. This professional development opportunity is unique in that a teacher is able to engage in professional dialogue with teachers from across the world as well as gain an understanding of social and cultural influences on education.
An International Teaching Fellowship is offered to teachers who have completed the application form available on the Victorian Department of Education web site. Teachers who undertake a teaching fellowship are supported by their Principals as being exemplary teachers who have a passion for their craft.
It is expected that teachers who participate in the program will make their investigation available to other members of the education community via a report to the Department of Education as well as their own school.

Read this story below (published in DET Schools Bulletin on March 1st) about Brett's experience in 2016 where he exchanged from Balwyn to Toronto.

"Going global with the Victorian International Teaching Fellowship Program 2017"
The Victorian International Teaching Fellowship Program (VITF) is an exchange program for teachers and school leaders and applications to participate in the Program in 2017 are now open.
The program contributes to the professional learning of Victorian teachers and school leaders and enables the contributions of overseas and returning Victorian teachers to be integrated into our schools.
Brett Hobbs from Balwyn High School participated in the program and undertook an exchange to Toronto in 2015.
‘I learned about the program when I taught with teachers from Canada in Victoria and I saw it as an experience to teach overseas,’ said Brett.
‘I thought it would be very challenging as I applied with my partner and we have three children under ten, but we were all able to move to Toronto as I began the fellowship.’
The Program usually involves the direct exchange of teaching positions and accommodation from January to December 2017; however some July to July placements can be arranged with principal approval.
‘12 months away in another system helps reinvigorate you as a teacher and it makes you appreciate the system we have here in Victoria as well.’
‘The support we received from the Department and Bastow helped me feel like I was part of something bigger not just an individual.’
Countries involved include Canada, UK, USA and Germany. Some placements may be available at International Schools. Exchanges in additional jurisdictions may also be negotiated by the Department. Throughout the program, participants will also be linked up with colleagues and staff back at the Department and undertake a guided research project as part of their professional learning.
‘As a by-product, my family now have an international link and my kids were able to keep up the dialogue back and forth with their friends and school in Toronto,’ Brett said.
‘As a teacher it was quite affirming to know that teaching really is a global village and that there is this international understanding of building life-long learners and critical thinkers.’

The intrepid young travellers had an amazing time in Scotland, taking in Loch Ness, Edinburgh Castle and the Isle of Skye. They had a taste of school life in Scotland, attending Goodlyburn Primary School with their home stay host siblings and immersed themselves in local festivities.
